Directions to Williams Wharf
Home of Mathews High School Crew, Gloucester High School Crew
and the
Mobjack Rowing Association
From the South:
Take I64 to the Route 17 (J. Clyde Morris Boulevard) exit. Follow Route 17 North through Gloucester County. Turn right on Route 17 Business after you pass Danny's Glass and the BB&T Bank. Turn right onto Route 14 at the first stoplight. Follow Route 14 until you reach a stop sign (about 12 miles). Turn right onto Buckley Hall Road (still Rt. 14, too). Stop at the first stop sign. Turn right onto Main Street (there will be a Hardee's here). Drive about 2 miles and turn right on Williams Wharf Road (Route 614). Follow it to the end (Williams Wharf) or until directed to a designated parking area.
From the West:
Take I64 to Exit 220 (Route 33). Follow it to Glenns. There will be a 7-11 across Route 17. Go straight through the intersection and you will magically be on Route 198 instead of Route 33. At the first stop sign turn left. This is also Route 198 (Buckley Hall Road once you get to Mathews County). Follow it to the first stop sign (about 15 miles). Turn right again onto Main Street (there will be a Hardee's here). Drive about 2 miles and turn right on Williams Wharf Road (Route 614). Follow it to the end (Williams Wharf) or until directed to park in the designated lot.
From Northern Virginia:
Take I95 to Fredericksburg. Get off at the Route 17 South Exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp. Go about 1 mile and turn left on Route 17. Follow Route 17 to Glenns. This is a fairly long trip and you will go through Tappahannock on the way. It has fast food restaurants. Turn left at Glenns where the 7-11 is. You will be on Route 198. At the first stop sign turn left. This is also Route 198 (Buckley Hall Road once you get to Mathews County). Follow it to the first stop sign (about 15 miles). Turn right again onto Main Street (there will be a Hardee's here). Drive about 2 miles and turn right on Williams Wharf Road (Rt. 614). Follow it to the end (Williams Wharf) or until directed to park in the designated lot.
From the East:
If you are looking for Williams Wharf from the East, you missed it on the first try. This will probably occur to you about the time you get to Bavon and find that you have run out of road wide enough to feel comfortable, especially if you are driving the shells. You can turn right at Bavon and the road will circle back eventually to Main Street (Rt. 14). This time Williams Wharf Road will be on your left.
By Boat: Row, sail or motor in from the Chesapeake Bay to the Mobjack Bay. From the New Point Comfort Lighthouse follow the shoreline up the East River to Williams Wharf.
If you get lost, the natives are generally friendly and often can provide reliable directions to get you back on course. There is even a visitor's center in town for professional advice!
